The Washington, D.C. area is one of many hot spots that are energizing the nation's growing demand for secret doors in interior design, the Washington Post reports. These secret doors can be in the form of panels, bookcases, mirrors or even artwork, the Post writes. While a hidden door can be installed for secrecy, the element can also solve design problems in smaller spaces.

Three years ago, Home Depot began to offer, online, pre-hung bookcase-doors from Murphy Door in Ogden, Utah. "The overall draw to the site was more than we expected," Watchko said. "It's very popular on the East Coast and anywhere there is a large metropolitan area."

The secret doors are not just limited to the Home Depot offerings, and the Post includes several examples of residents in the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia area who had secret door installations done be local contractors and remodelers.
