Project Description
Project Details Date: 2014-2016 Area: 3,847 sf/ 357 m2 The clients’ home, beautifully sited on a densely wooded hill, provided extraordinary privacy and seclusion 4 miles from the District of Columbia. However, at less than 2000 ft2, and with 2 children approaching teenage years, the clients needed more space. The mid-century modern aesthetic, simple volumes and details first drew the clients to the property and they did not want to lose these design features in the renovation. Equally important was preserving views from the living spaces to the exterior. Two separate pavilions were added. One pavilion provides a master bedroom and home office and new view sheds to the north and over the existing house to the south. The second pavilion, equipped with a custom murphy bed, provides another living space that doubles as a guest room. The pavilions and existing house were clad in Shou Sugi Ban siding that will gracefully patina amongst the trees. The placement of the pavilions was governed by sightlines and view sheds, and defines exterior spaces into outdoor rooms. Glass walkways connecting the pavilions touch the existing house as delicately as possible. The home has doubled in size but the ambiance of the site is preserved.
