Kitchen Remodel Under $100,000: Merit
Using a stark black and white palette leavened by lashings of walnut and natural light, Dixon created a sleek, modern design for this kitchen in the renovation of a four-story Hoboken, N.J., townhouse.
A focal point in the kitchen is the tray ceiling, whose recessed interior is also clad in walnut to match the flooring and the paneling on the seating side of the island. The partitions of a glass NanaWall at the end of the kitchen fold to the side, opening the space to a 6½-foot-deep balcony that runs 19½ feet long—almost the entire width of the house—and bringing in natural light.
With the exception of the dishwasher, which is located in the island, the appliances are ganged on the side wall directly opposite a buffet created with shallower cabinets (17½ inches deep) and topped with the same white Caesarstone that clads the waterfall island and other countertops. The kitchen walls are painted white, and the custom cabinetry is black MDF, which is also used to sheathe the appliances.
Cove lighting in the tray ceiling provides a gentle illumination. Pot lights as well as a trio of glass pendants over the island provide plenty of task lighting.
Unlike the rest of the main floor, where old brick and beams were exposed, Dixon hid structural and mechanical systems in the kitchen for a streamlined, unified look.
Project Description
FROM THE FIRM:
609 Willow, a four-bedroom, four-and-a-half bath showplace pairing old and new along Willow Avenue with historic bones and top-notch modern amenities. The home’s bold façade strikes an immediate and impressive note with repointed original brick and restored features painted a daring, unifying black. This unique and unexpected treatment creates a contemporary focal point on a block that features both historic townhomes and newer construction buildings. A massive open kitchen with top-of-the-line appliances by Bertazzoni and Bosch was designed, while the garden flow below offers a fully-finished bright white space with industrial touches as an open canvas open to the owner’s interpretation as a rec room, home gym or storage space.
