Kitchen Remodel over $100,000: Merit
The dark, cramped kitchen in this Toronto home needed to be opened up and connected to the rear yard. The clients also requested the design provide for privacy between the living space and the kitchen, as well as a dedicated study space.
Taking advantage of an unusually wide lot, Paul Gallop’s team built an addition on the rear that made it possible to create a completely renovated and expanded kitchen. Durability and modern aesthetics were kept in mind through the use of quartz countertops and a walnut wood floor. The cabinets’ high-gloss white finish helps keep the kitchen feeling bright and airy. There’s also a custom desk space set amid the cabinetry.
A big patio door provides access to the outside, while a large barn door was installed between the living and dining areas to unite or divide the spaces as necessary. And a large island provides seating for all family members and a space for people to gather around when the family entertains.
Project Description
FROM THE FIRM:
Our clients wanted to update their dark, cramped kitchen and create a connection to the rear yard. They requested some level of privacy between the living space and the kitchen, and a dedicated study/desk space to be integrated somewhere in the design. We rejuvenated the ground floor with a complete kitchen renovation, which included a large patio door to the rear that makes the kitchen bright and airy. A large sliding barn door was installed between the kitchen and dinning/living space to provide privacy when desired. The contemporary cabinetry provides ample storage space for kitchen paraphernalia as well as a custom desk space that keeps this busy family of four organized. When selecting the kitchen materials we had to think about the everyday family use of the space, with durability and the clients modern aesthetics in mind, we believe we successfully achieved the desired, high quality finish overall. The high gloss white cabinetry keeps the kitchen feeling bright and airy. Natural elements like the touches of flat cut walnut in the cabinetry, the marble looking quartz countertops, as well as the walnut floor, all add warmth and contrast to this modern design. The layout of the kitchen allows for easy circulation for daily use, as well as entertaining. The large island provides seating for all members of the family, extra storage and is a perfect spot for family and friends to gather around. A rear addition was necessary to provide the family with the kitchen they desired.
