According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s latest Survey of Construction, 60% of new single-family homes started in 2017 had two full bathrooms. Twenty-seven percent of new home starts had three full bathrooms, while 9% had four full bathrooms or more and 4% had one full bathroom or less.
The number of full bathrooms in new homes varies by Census division. In the Pacific division, 42% of new homes have three or more full baths, followed by 40% in the South Atlantic division. Conversely, only 23% of new homes in the East South Central division have three or more full bathrooms.
The Pacific division experienced a five percentage point increase in homes with 3+ full bathrooms from 2016 to 2017, while New England’s share fell three percentage points over the same period.
Since 2013, the shares of new homes by each bathroom grouping have been essentially flat. While the number of full bathrooms in new homes has been fairly stable, it is most likely the case that the size of these bathrooms has decreased, as the average square footage of new homes has declined since 2013.
