Home Innovation Research Labs' Annual Consumer Practices Survey is complete, providing data on the remodeling activities and purchases of U.S. and Canadian households in more than 40 product categories. The research provides a pre-coronavirus (COVID-19) benchmark to measure against when business returns to a normal level. Among the key takeaways from the survey include:

  • Steel and Aluminum siding are coming on strong
  • Luxury Vinyl Plank sold more than ever; however, growth in Vinyl Sheet and Tile played a bigger role in gains for the vinyl and resilient flooring categories
  • Granite countertops are on a deep slide, Quartz growth has moderated, and some modestly-priced countertop alternatives are seeing a brisk return
  • For the first year, Non-Wood Finish kitchen cabinet popularity surpassed Wood Finish
  • Patio Doors and Windows took an upscale turn, favoring Clad Wood
  • Solid interior doors continue to outpace Hollow Core doors; Double Swinging doors are replacing Bi-Fold for closets; and Mirrored closet doors are on a decided upward swing
  • PE-RT is gaining ground, particularly in whole-home piping replacements

The Consumer Practices Reports cover building products used in residential repair and remodeling and can be paired with our annual Builder Practices Reports to give you a complete view of the residential construction market.
