By Christine Hartman. There is a romantic element to an outdoor room -- the fresh air and the cool breezes add to a certain mystique. Unfortunately, the things that make an outdoor room romantic can also make it annoying -- fresh air can turn to cold air, cool breezes to harsh wind. To keep clients from suffering through cold spells in their outdoor room in Seattle, architect Milan Heger added an indoor feature to the outside space: a fully working fireplace.

The fireplace actually does double duty. It also warms the family room, on the other side of the exterior wall. The indoor and the outdoor hearths share a chimney.
