Environmental Protection Agency

These postcards, mailed mid-January to 500,000 contractors and sent electronically to 40,000, are part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s ongoing outreach to educate contractors about the Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) rule.

The campaign is aimed at a range of contractors from plumbers and painters to remodelers. “We tried our best to exclude the certified renovators,” says Tala Henry, director of the National Program Chemicals Division, in the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics, EPA.

The postcard includes the URL for a website where contractors can turn in their non-compliant peers. Henry says that although the site has been available for about a year now and is included on the EPA’s RRP site, the program had received input from the construction industry that there are contractors who are not following the RRP rule. “Our effort to increase awareness is consistent with having heard that message,” Henry says, and the link to the violations site on all the EPA outreach “highlights a place where people can report that if they feel the need.” —Nina Patel, senior editor,REMODELING. twitter.com/silvernina
