A majority of millennials lust for kitchens with white cabinets, according to the National Association of Home Builders' (NAHB) 2019 What Home Buyers Really Want study. The survey polls recent and prospective buyers—people who have bought homes in the last three years or plan on purchasing a home in the next three years—about desired features in their spaces. Millennials, defined as individuals born after 1980, also desire stainless steel appliances and natural stone countertops in their kitchens, Eye on Housing reports.

A considerable share of millennials—31%—prefer white kitchen cabinets. However, as far as other cabinet color options, millennials are essentially split: 18% prefer dark brown cabinets, 16% prefer medium brown, 14% prefer black, and 13% prefer gray cabinets. In general, millennials share similar cabinet color preferences with older generations. For example, there is less than a 10 percentage point gap between millennials and seniors who prefer white kitchen cabinets.

Most millennials—64%—prefer a stainless-steel color for their kitchen appliances while significantly smaller shares prefer black (22%) and white (12%). In fact, stainless-steel is the most popular appliance color across all generations, with at least 64% expressing a preference for it. When it comes to black, however, millennials are more likely to choose it (22%) than gen X’ers (16%), baby boomers (13%) and seniors (12%).

The report also includes data on preferred countertop materials. A large share of millennials—62%—prefer granite/natural stone countertops, significantly more than the shares that prefer quartz/engineered stone (17%), laminate (12%), and solid surface countertops (7%). Granite/natural stone countertops are slightly more popular among younger generations: 62% of millennials and 64% of gen X’ers prefer it, compared to 53% of baby boomers and 55% of seniors. Quartz/Engineered stone countertops, on the other hand, are more preferred with older generations.
