As part of the process of revamping distribution to better serve professional customers, Home Depot launched a flatbed distribution center in Dallas, Texas. The center is one of several new types of delivery centers that are part of the home-improvement retailer's $1.2 billion investment to build around 150 new facilities across the United States to reach 90% of the population with same-day and next-day delivery, according to a news release.

“We expect to build 40 flatbed distribution centers in the 40 largest markets, so we can bring those products to customers on a same-day, next-day basis,” executive vice president of supply chain and product development Mark Holifield said in a public statement. “Our flatbed distribution centers help us provide the tools and materials pros need for their jobs on a same day, next day basis, where and when they need it.”

Home Depot’s definition of pro includes remodelers and builders, as well as maintenance, repair, and operating supply workers. While only 4% of the company's customers are people who make a living in the residential remodeling and maintenance market, that cohort represents 45% of annual sales. The flatbed distribution center can provide delivery service for heavy products such as lumber, ladders, pipes, and roofing materials. According to The Dallas Morning News, the Dallas facility can handle 65 to 75 trucks going out per day and the flatbed facility will service customers within a 75-mile radius of Dallas.

In addition to building the flatbed distribution center, Home Depot is also building a 1.6 million-square-foot fulfillment center for online shopping in Dallas next to the flatbed facility.
