Homeowners are planning to remain active in the remodeling sector during 2020. A recent survey from HGTV reported nearly two in five homeowners are planning to do some kind of renovation project during the year. In a continuation of long-standing preferences, these homeowners will prioritize kitchen and bathroom renovations above all other rooms. To help professionals better appeal to the large cohort of homeowners looking to update these spaces, Sweeten, a renovation service that aims to match renovators with vetted contractors, shared its top trends for kitchens and bathrooms in 2020.
Bathroom Trends
- Blue Baths. Sweeten has seen blue increase in use steadily in recent years, and it expects blue to take off in 2020. Sherwin-Williams and Pantone appointed blue hues as their colors of the year, paving the way for more blues to be used in bathroom remodels.
- Floating Vanities. Floating vanities can make smaller bathrooms appear more spacious and can provide homeowners with ample storage options underneath. Floating vanities also convey a modern look that is easy to maintain and allow more surface areas for tiles, according to Sweeten.
- Large Tiles. Large-format tiles can provide big impacts in the bathroom, creating a seamless look from shower walls, floors, and tub surrounds.
- European Style Wet Rooms. Wet rooms—defined as a bathroom with an open floor plan that has a drain to which water is directed—are growing in popularity among American homeowners. Wet rooms appeal to homeowners because they are easy to clean and can help make smaller bathrooms appear larger.
Kitchen Trends
- The "Semi-Open" Concept. After years of demanding fully open living spaces, homeowners are increasingly deciding that a little division can be a good thing. This is manifesting itself in archways or sliding doors to provide rooms with a greater degree of separation.
- Warm Metallics. More luxe gold tones, such as gold and brass, are popping up in the kitchen, according to Sweeten, and can match other warm surfaces, including wood cabinets. Gold and brass metallics can also pop when paired with white cabinets.
- Refrigerators Outside the Kitchen. Sweeten is frequently seeing renovators embrace the idea of zones in their kitchen and many are electing to locate refrigerators outside the kitchen to allow for a better visual flow and increased functionality—in the form of more working counter space.
- Textured Tiles. Sweeten sees textured tiles as the lasting trend to help homeowners achieve more depth in their kitchens. Tiles are versatile and can be used to suit any aesthetic, according to Sweeten.
In addition to Sweeten, other design platforms have made trend predictions to help professionals hone in on what homeowners are expected to want in 2020. Kitchen and bath specialty retailer Hausera predicted black will begin to replace white-on-white in bathrooms during 2020 and design platform Houzz forecast more tiled bathroom aprons, softly colored kitchens, and double floating vanities in 2020.
