In this Washington basement, it’s hard to tell where the outside ends and the inside begins. Contractor Mike Madden, of Madden Corp., and architect Janet Bloomberg, of Kube Architecture, transformed the space into a modern open-air escape where their clients could relax after a busy workday. A continuous steel frame and teak slat ceiling seamlessly connect an outdoor garden pavilion to a sleek indoor floor plan. This cohesive design gives the interior a larger feel. The folding glass wall, by Nanawall, allows homeowners to easily expand or close off the space. Inside, a movable frosted glass door by Potomac Woodwork separates the bathroom. To keep the space looking modern and clean, a teak wall hides storage under the mahogany stairs.
