Priorities

• Execute a “marble box” bathroom concept with custom details and features • Include a large shower, private room for the toilet, double-sink vanity, and make-up area
• Create a walk-through closet with functional storage

Solutions

When the time came for the second phase of this whole-house remodel, DeRhodes Construction, led by Eddie DeRhodes, returned to tackle the second floor. Among the family’s requests was a walk-through closet with plenty of storage and an upgraded master bathroom. With just 110 square feet of space to construct a fully equipped bathroom, the design/build team had their work cut out for them. The result? A luxurious collection of spaces for bathing, grooming, and dressing.

DeRhodes Construction described the remodel as complex; requiring precise planning and framing, and called the design concept a “marble box.” The characteristic feature of the new space is honed Carrera marble throughout with floor-to-ceiling 9-inch-by-18-inch tiles and marble countertops. On the floor, Tribeca classic basket weave marble tile warms with radiant heat.

The vanity wall blends several unique touches. Inset hand-painted cabinetry offers storage below a marble countertop that sports double sinks, and two mirrors with incandescent sconce lighting frame a metal awning window. The team mitered, beveled, and fabricated marble to create the impression of large columns and beams accenting the wall.

Along the hallway leading to the bathroom, custom linen press cabinets on one side face louvered doors that open into the walk-in closet on the other side. Another private room houses the space-saving, tank-in-wall toilet. There you can also find controls for the heated floors and towel bar.

Attention to detail and skilled craftsmanship distinguish this project. The marble dressing table counter slices through the shower glass to become a shelf sitting atop a tapered stainless steel leg. The shower shelf has a built-in scalloped soap dish and grooved drains along the elliptical edge. It’s one of many clever details that impressed the judges.

Judges’ Comments

The judges called the remodel well designed with “carefully considered details.” They found plenty to like about the project, such as the transitional dressing area, the window set between the mirrors, and the way the shelf smoothly continues through the shower glass.
