Punch List had humble beginnings. Starting out, it was just Jim Copenhaver doing handyman work out of his truck. After a few years of that, Copenhaver branched into kitchen and bathroom remodels. Now, K+B work provides about 80% of the company’s revenue.
For now, the company’s sweet spot is doing smaller kitchen remodels—about $15,000 to $20,000 each. That size of project works well for both him and his team because Punch List can get in and out of a job in a few weeks and then quickly move to the next project. As the company continues to grow, Copenhaver says the job price might go up a little bit, but the K+B focus will remain.
The transition has been slow; Copenhaver admits that getting his clients to view his company as more than a handyman service has been a challenge. To help quicken the pace, Copenhaver is developing a new website that will focus mostly on the K+B projects he and his company do.
In addition, the company details kitchen and bath work in email marketing blasts that reach 7,000 potential clients. Copenhaver also has changed his listing on Yelp, a huge driver for the company, from handyman to contractor. He says that his company receives 15 to 20 leads from Yelp per day.
Beyond those initiatives, Punch List has a module on its website that allows potential clients to reach out to the company with basic information about their project. That module gives the company about five leads per day.
