Morris Builders, a design/build company, focuses on kitchens, baths, additions, and basement remodels. The company manages the typically five or six projects it has going at any one time through a production manager/ lead carpenter system. Turnover is 0%.
The company keeps its clients happy, too. It recently updated its Web site to afford customers access to job information such as contracts and pictures.
Two years ago, owner Kirk Morris had a peer group in town to do a case study on his company. That resulted in improved paperwork to the field, weekly production meetings, and a much greater focus on numbers. "What we found out from talking to other people in the industry," says Joy Morris, "is that bigger is not always better. We decided that if we're going to grow, we're going to grow profitably.
