Project Info

Architect: Jan Gleysteen, Jan Gleysteen Architects, Wellesley, Mass.
Contractor: Scott Goldstein, S.G. Homes, Mashpee, Mass.

Priorities

  • Expand narrow foyer to create a grander entry

  • Add light and drama to the great room

  • Create better sight lines to the ocean view

Solutions

Though small, the 1-foot deep gabled addition packs a punch by adding height to the living room ceiling and creating a framework for the ocean view. Wainscoting and millwork add elegance to the entire great room, wrapping around the fireplace and new wall of media cabinets. The same millwork is used in the new foyer where the architect added a 5-foot deep addition with a cathedral ceiling to create a more impressive entry. A new mahogany front door welcomes visitors, and larger windows bring more light into the space.

Judges’ Comments

The judges noted the new entry’s “improved sequence” that takes advantage of ocean views and the open spaces surrounding the property. The jury also commented on the project’s “incredible integration” of new and existing spaces.
