Remodeling is by its very nature a contentious process. But there is no magic bullet to protect against run-ins with customers or, worse, with their lawyers. The best protection, many remodelers agree, is as simple as establishing the rules and then making sure everyone follows them.
Most modern contracts account for at least some known and unknown risks such as force majeure events (e.g., unusually severe weather, labor strikes) and differing conditions on the project site. But one risk not often addressed is price fluctuations for labor, materials, and equipment.
Sound business practices and solid customer relations are key to keeping yourself out of court while still collecting every dime that's owed to you. So, too, is choosing your clients carefully, so that you're working for people who aren't looking to pull one over on you.
