    This mid-century ranch on the Banana River, part of the Intracoastal Waterway, was remodeled for a client who wanted to maximize the river view and incorporate a Miami-style resort feel without compromising the structure's compatibility with the neighborhood.

    A touch of "mid-century" modern inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright was given to the breezeway with a ledgestone wall that flows from the outside through the entrance and into the kitchen.

    The ledgestone wall offers a pleasing contrast with the kitchen's basic color palette and varied textrues. Nearly all of the home's original terrazzo floors were kept.

    A new master suite with lanai were added to the end of the house. Retractable screens are incorporated into the lanai structure for insect control. In addition, a mosquito-control misting system was added to the home's entire back elevation.

    The design takes full advantage of the natural evening drama at sunset.

Challenge: To update and brighten this 1960s ranch on the Intracoastal Waterway. Designers removed walls to open the floor plan and brought back original terrazzo floors. New windows take advantage of the view. Judges appreciated: the textural contrast of the stone wall as a dramatic kitchen backdrop.
