Like many aspects of remodeling, estimating is a process made easier by the computer. With a growing list of bells and whistles, estimating programs not only offer a faster alternative to using pencil and paper but also are becoming an important component to an efficient business.

In addition to speed, estimating programs can store a range of information, including past figures and estimates, which can prevent repetitive entering and reduce inaccuracies. Bid-Builder from Eagle Point offers more than 100 pre-made assemblies that can quickly be adapted for the individual remodeler. Xactware's Xactimate has a database of more than 3,000 products with prices that are updated quarterly.

"The ability to instantly change things is what the software allows you to do," says remodeler Fred Colton of F.R. Colton in Brewster, Mass., who uses WinEstimator. "It saves hours and hours of time in redundant, repetitive tasks."

Many of the estimating programs today can be integrated with other software operations, such as QuickBooks and project management programs. And as programs evolve and remodelers become more computer-savvy, the learning curve is improving. With many programs boasting a training time of only a few hours, there is little excuse not to trade in your trusty No. 2 pencil for a computer mouse.
