- Create a workspace that represents the culture of One & Co.’s collaborative studio, its design values, and the firm’s increasing prominence
SolutionsThe newly remodeled entry engages the street with a small porch and wide windows that offer a glimpse inside at the conference room’s large panels of startlingly white low-iron glass walls.
The design’s open plan takes advantage of existing tall windows to the south and east, placing staff desks near windows and locating support spaces — the prototype-making shop, bike holding area, storage, and the “war room” — deep within the interior.
White-painted beams and a high open-joist ceiling add to the feeling of lightness. The neutral palette is punctuated by hot pink on particular walls and flooring and some of the furniture.
To contain costs, the designers employed both inexpensive and high-end materials — Ikea cabinets and off-the-shelf hardware mix with highly customized walnut panels — as well as items designed by One & Co., such as the textured wall tile, “Crease,” which is installed behind the reception area and was developed in collaboration with Heath Ceramics, a Bay Area company.
Judges’ CommentsThis remodel, the judges noted, which helps One & Co. create an identity consistent with its design aesthetic, is “clean and minimal.” Architect Cary Bernstein describes her design as “well-edited but also lyrical.” The awards judges agreed.
