Project Description

The client is the stage production manager for many famous bands, including Metallica. As a result, he spends over 300 nights a year in hotels. The goal behind the architecture and interior design of this mountain home near Vail, Colorado, was to create a place of peace and relaxation for the client when he returned home from travel. Personal interests, such as a significant, personal photography collection, were addressed in the design. Additionally, attention was paid to the client's awareness of his impact on the environment, including specifications for lighting and insulation preferences, as well input provided on certain interior finishes. Aligning the design with the client’s vision, the team removed the existing winder stair to provide simpler access to the bedroom level, improved kitchen size and functionality, and increased natural lighting through careful space planning that worked with the existing windows. Additionally, specified interior lighting programs, insulation preferences, white oak floors and doors, walnut built-ins, organic furniture mixed in with clean millwork lines and room geometries were just some of the ways the design team addressed the client’s requirement of minimal impact on the environment. As an ode to the owner's work and lifestyle, special attention was paid to displaying approximately 100 of the thousands of photographs he took during Metallica’s 2013 tour, where they became the first band to play on every continent in the world.
