Project Description

Entrepreneurs, such as the Silicon Valley-savvy pair that inhabit this residence, understand it can take a few tries to get something right. After a series of additions and alterations left this unique Palo Alto home an amalgamation of awkward spaces and mismatched aesthetics, the clients, who were intrigued by the home’s distinct character and placement, approached local firm Feldman Architecture to transform its existing bones into something more representative of their family’s playful nature.

The firm repurposed the footprint of the ranch-style home, which sits between a quiet cul-de-sac and running creek, as the foundation of its reinvention. From there, the team opened and expanded the home’s public spaces to create a sanctuary that seamlessly blends indoors and out. At the center of the home is a glass vestibule that draws family and visitors inside and through the kitchen and living room. The dining room which is enclosed by a glass and steel-framed box, extends into the back patio, creating a place to eat, work, and enjoy the site’s natural surroundings.

A muted palette of white paired with light and dark wood lets the client’s vast book collection  accentuate the interior and the wooded exterior highlight its façade. Outside, custom-designed radiant-heated flooring allows the family to move comfortably, and at times even barefoot,  within the peaceful, polished retreat, creating a home that is truly warm and inviting year-round.
