Garage doors effectively replace a full exterior wall of some homes, and these days entry-level models aren't always enough to fill that hole. Instead, sturdier insulated steel models, like those shown here, are gaining popularity in a market where, according to manufacturer Overhead Door, steel doors already make up half of the market. Look for models that combine high R-values with a wide range of design options.

The Courtyard Collection 370 series carriage house door features Thermacore solid polyurethane insulation, yielding a low air infiltration rating and an R-value of 9.31. Offering the look of wood, the door has a durable two-coat painted steel exterior and interior finish designed to resist rust and corrosion. All Courtyard Collection series doors are made from steel that uses more than 50% recycled content. The 370 series is available in six designs and six base colors.

A “sandwich” insulated version of the Gallery Collection embossed steel carriage house door is now available. Three-layer 1 3 /8- or 2-inch expanded polystyrene insulation is pressure bonded to interior and exterior steel skins. Both models have a thermal break for increased insulation, and achieve an R-value of 6.5 for the 1 3/8-inch model, or 9 for the 2-inch model.

LiftMaster Fingerprint Keyless Entry offers easy and secure home access. Users need not carry a key or remember an entry code, and only the four people whose fingerprint data is programmed into the unit can get inside. The wireless, weatherproof unit comes with four AAA batteries and shuts off after 10 seconds to preserve battery life.

Additions to the four-section Oak Summit Collection include recessed- and raised-panel door styles. Both styles are available with standard color, window, and hardware options. Also new is the 1 3/8-inch-thick Oak Summit 3000, which layers polystyrene insulation between 27-gauge steel sheets for durability, noise reduction, and a 6.58 R-value.

Designed for heavier carriage house garage door applications, 7-, 8-, and 10-foot Carriage House Conversion Rails can be field-installed on top of the maker's belt-drive HBT rails or chain-drive HCT rails. The combination forms a stronger I-beam. Such systems are compatible with Linear LDO33, LDO50, and LSO50 openers.
