Storage Hutch Does Double-Duty for Display and Recycling

Merit Award: Craftsmanship/Detail Under $25,000

This kitchen remodel by Platt Builders (plattbuilders.com), in Groton, Mass., includes a hutch that blends with the historical home’s period style but that conceals a recycling center and drawers that reach back into the under-stair space.

The hutch has three large drawers set back into the space under the stairs — one for recycling, two for storage — mounted on Accuride (accuride.com) full-extension glides. The recycling center and the two drawers to the right are 48 inches deep, but the top left drawer is shallower to accommodate the stair stringer.

The hutch was pre-painted in the contractor’s shop and installed on site. The electrical outlets were cut on site and then a master painter painted the outlet covers — including adding faux beadboard lines.

Remodeler Halsey Platt also exposed the bottom five treads to the left of the hutch to create a more open feel. The judges appreciated the unifying effect created by painting the stair balusters the same base green color as the hutch.
