Merit Award: Whole-House Remodeling $250,000 - $500,000

Set on a slight hill, the one-story house with a walk-out basement was transformed into a two-story house with a walk-out lower level, featuring a redesigned deck that extends off the side.

Four windows and a collection of brightly colored attachments enliven the black metal exterior. The playful colors that pop up here and throughout the house echo one of the paintings in Richard Diebenkorn's "Ocean Park" series.

At the top of the gentle slope, a walkway leads from the sidewalk to this entryway on the deck, where a circular cutout gracefully accomodates a tree.

An open plan distinguishes the main level of the house. Pale oak flooring, all-white walls, and few furnishishings make for a bright, spacious interior.

Sunlight floods in through Pella Corp. picture windows (pella.com) on each wall, mingling with ample interior lighting by Juno Lighting Group (junolightinggroup.com).
