Merit Award: Old-House Renovation: Mile-High Mediterranean

Every lovely old neighborhood has an eyesore, and this 1926 Denver home had been sufficiently neglected and insensitively expanded to fit the bill.

The renovation of this 1926 Denver home was inspired by the 1903 Spanish gate to its north.

Before. The existing home was a blank slate.

Before. Insensitive additions had had obliterated the home's original character.

Broad overhanging eaves and tile roof complement the Mediterranean style. Picture and ganged windows gave way to classic pairs.

The only added square footage was a small sunroom. As seen from the side, the home's mass is more human-scale, thanks to roofs that "layer" the fa??ade.

A new pergola shades the back patio. A bracketed overhang was added to the existing attached garden shed to enliven the fa??ade.

The larger back porch ties the home to the yard.

A century-old Spanish gate sets the tone for the community.
