Merit Award: Eclectic Kitchen

Green principles guide the remodel of a cramped kitchen.

The remodeler's own home, this project set out to be beautiful and have a minimal impact on the environment.

The original kitchen was dated and cramped, made worse by a series of poorly planned rooms that relate neither to the exterior or each other.

The first design decision was to reorient the kitchen to occupy the former eating area that faces north and captures a breathtaking view of the Catalina Mountains.

The breakfast nook is in the space of the former kitchen.

Recyled, reusmed, and low-impact materials were used to the extent possible. The island countertop was made from reclaimed beech from an elementary school floor.

Custom cabinets are made of FSC-certified plywood painted with low-VOC paint. Glues are soy-based and formaldehyde-free.
