Merit Award: Concealed Kitchen

This multifunctional space-saving kitchen is high on style and clever features.

Designer Erla Ingjaldsdottir was hired to renovate the kitchen in this Reykjavik business apartment. It had to function as a work area and be suitable for entertaining.

The refrigerator, dishwasher and Miele coffeemaker are hidden behind cabinet doors.

The island has built-in chairs and can be used for dining or as a desk.

Ground lava mixed with resin was applied in a 1/2-inch thick layer to the backsplash.

A stainless lid in the countertop covers the sink and cooktop.

The large stainless sink has a faucet that is attached to the lid. The small cooktop and controls fit next to the sink.

LED lighting above the backsplash provides a subtle glow.

The countertop on the island is made of Corian.

The lava pieces are set on a glass sheet that is lit red by LED lighting.
