Massachusetts Historic Landmark Attains LEED-Silver

Green renovation of a 200-year-old Salem house improves efficiency without sacrificing historical integrity.

The 9,000-square-foot Joseph Story House took two years to renovate into a LEED-Silver dwelling.

Doors were installed on all of the home’s operable fireplaces in order to meet LEED requirements for indoor air quality.

Groceries and other supplies are brought to the kitchen from the adjacent garage via a dumbwaiter-like lift system, and a chute provides easy access to recycling bins in the garage. A four-level elevator also services the house.

The new carriage house wing contains a kitchen, garage, loft media room, and pergola.

The 88 low-E putty-profile windows from JB Sash of Chelsea, Mass., meet Energy Star and historic commission requirements.
