Grand Award: Roots Music

This organically inspired addition and renovation of a wedge-shaped, brick-faced 1970s home melds with its environment.

This organically inspired addition and renovation of a wedge-shaped, brick-faced 1970s home responds to its forested views while adding a texturally rich layering of decks, terraces, screens, railings, and outdoor living space.

Decks and raised terraces at all levels allow for on-level access and connection to the outdoors.

Almost solid wood member railings and vertical wood screen walls define outdoor rooms and provide varied levels of privacy from the park.

"It references [Frank Lloyd Wright's] Robey house, and the presentation is superb," said one judge.

The solution "addresses the front entrance in such a way that it creates a grand sequence," said the judges.

Building upon the existing '70s color and material palate, the renovation improves both with new architectural elements.
