Grand Award 1: Expansive Details

Architect Stephen Muse's award-winning residential addition in Washington, D.C.

Architect Stephen Muse placed a 40-foot by 40-foot great room into the home's existing terrace. The two-story structure and single-story flanking additions connect the indoors with the expansive backyard.

The dramatic evening view of the two-story addition.

The living/dining room also provides the central circulation for the house. Private spaces can be accessed from the second floor terrace.

The living/dining room is ideal for entertaining large groups.

The second floor terrace has the same custom patterned concrete block used in the great room and exterior of the addition.

Custom French doors lead from the great room to the garden terrace.

A built-in seating area (left) bridges the space between the kitchen and living/dining rooms.

The kitchen is centrally located near the family room and living/dining room.

Muse included many sustainable elements in the remodel including underground tanks that store up to 24,000 gallons of rainwater for lawn irrigation, geothermal HVAC, photovoltaic solar panels on the roof, and LED light fixtures.
