The existing storage room was next to the kitchen and adjacent to the mechanical room ñ the perfect spot for a cold environment.

To fulfill this Washington, D.C., townhome ownersí desire for a wine and root cellar and place to prep baked goods, Hanan & Lerner Fine Woodworking from Capitol Heights, Md., converted a basement storage room.

Hanan & Lerner Fine Woodworking removed the existing drywall and sprayed closed-cell polyurethane foam in the walls and ceiling to maintain the conditioned environment. The closed-cell foam serves as both insulation and a vapor barrier essential for a cold room.

Behind a mesh grill is the WhisperKOOL self-contained chiller unit, which vents to the adjacent mechanical room, and keeps the temperature at an optimal 55 degrees. The wine racking system is by Vigilant Woodworks.

Below the racking system are a display shelf and pull out storage. Champagne corks as drawer pulls add a bit of whimsy.

Hanan & Lerner Fine Woodworking fabricated drawers for root vegetables and cheeses using wine crates for fronts. They added metal drawer liners for easy cleaning and sisal rope handles for a unique touch.
