Design Trends Through the Years

Take a look at past and current Remodeling Design Awards winners to see how interior design trends have changed in the last decade.

Kitchens have gone from ornate and dark, like the 2008 RMDA winner on the left, to sleek and white, with open floor plans, large islands, and fewer upper cabinets, like this 2016 RMDA winner, pictured right.

Bathrooms with large built-in tubs or Jacuzzis, like this RMDA winner from 2009, have given way to spa-like spaces with free-standing tubs and walk-in showers, such as this 2016 RMDA winner.

With an emphasis on improved natural lighting, windows have gotten taller and wider and have thinner profiles. Check out the differences between the 2007 RMDA-winning project, left, and a 2016 RMDA-winning project, right.

Outdoor Living

Outdoor living is now a full kitchen that can rival anything built indoors as well as an increased connection between outdoor and indoor living spaces. The outdoor space on the right, a 2008 RMDA winner, features a two-tiered pool and not much space for outdoor entertaining. The deck on the right, a 2016 RMDA winner, has ample space for entertaining, cooking, and relaxation.
