Builders Show Products, Day 1

10 new products, including squeak-eliminating subfloor fasteners, eco-friendly insulation, and a glass block egress window.

Paslode. It’s a nail. It’s a screw. Wait–it’s both! The TetraGrip subfloor fastener features a barb threaded design that grabs onto wood fibers to fasten securely and help eliminate floor squeaks. Because the fastener rotates as it drives, the maker also developed a new pneumatic nailer (model PF237C) specifically for the 2 3/8-inch TetraGrip to accommodate the unique motion. Together, the system saves users time and money, eliminating nail-first-screw-later installation patterns, and reducing the number of nails needed by 30%. 800.468.7403. –L.H.

Owens Corning. The company is replacing all of its batt insulation products with EcoTouch Pink Fiberglas with PureFiber technology, which is made with a formaldehyde-free formulation and contains at least 50% recycled content. The company claims the new formulation improves installation through reduced dust and particulates and increased workability. The product is certified by SCS for recycled content and by Greenguard for indoor air quality. 800.438.7465. --K.T.

Therma-Tru. Let in the light and fresh air more conveniently with new Vented Sidelites, available on entry or patio doors. Essentially built as very narrow doors, the lites feature full door stiles for rigidity and are available with the maker’s Tru-Defense system to maintain weather-tight qualities across the full door unit. A range of stylish glass options lets the sidelites fully match doors and transoms. Removable screens allow for easy cleaning, and a multi-point locking system helps ensure security. 800.843.7628. –L.H.

Hy-Lite. Design Series acrylic block windows meet safety codes while letting in light without a view of the window well. Designed to meet the IBC of 5.7 feet for egress, the vinyl-framed window will work in a bedroom or bathroom, not just a basement, says the firm. The easy-to-open windows let in air and are energy efficient, durable, lightweight, and come in a selection of styles and sizes. 888.256.2599. –E.R.

Tamko. Harness the power of the sun to lower energy costs with the Solar Attic Vent. Driven by a 20-watt solar panel, the fan can ventilate up to 1,600 square feet and operates from dawn to dusk, even without having to prop the panel toward the sun. The heavy-duty DC motor operates quietly, and the 12-inch diameter, one-piece aluminum fan adds no harmonic noise. An optional cold-weather thermostat is available separately and will disengage the unit automatically when the temperature falls below 50 degrees F. Choose from four different mounting options, including an option that allows the solar panel to operate the fan remotely. –L.H.

Ply Gem. Under its Designed Exteriors by Ply Gem collection, the company offers nine architectural styles designed to make product selection and ordering simple while allowing for easier differentiation within housing communities. Single-family homebuyers can select a home style, which were developed with residential architecture firm BSB Design and include all components and accessories to complete the look; from within each style, buyers then have a choice of three color combinations. Styles include Prairie, Craftsman, French Country (shown), Tuscan, and Victorian. –K.T.

Atlantic Premium Shutters. With a 1/8-inch-thick polycarbonate panel on one side and two horizontal steel bars on the other, Hurricane Storm-Rated Shutters meet IRC and IBC impact requirements and help protect windows from wind and flying-debris damage. The storm shutters are available across the maker’s Architectural and Classic Collection shutter style, except archtop shutters. Bahama-style shutters are also available as Hurricane Storm-Rated shutters. –L.H.

TimberTech. The manufacturer has expanded its XLM line of cellular PVC decking with two variegated color options—harbor stone (gray) and walnut grove (brown)—for a total offering of four variegated and three solid. XLM decking is stain, scratch, and mildew resistant; weighs 40% less than the company’s wood-plastic composite planks; and includes a solid cap surface to reinforce structural integrity, the firm says. Grooved and non-grooved planks are available in three lengths. –K.T.

Marvin. Combining classic style with high-tech performance, the Clad Ultimate Glider features an extruded aluminum frame that glides smoothly and auto-locks shut. Recessed hardware and a low handle ensure easy one-handed operation and a clean design, says the manufacturer. The window, which is available in seven wood species and 19 exterior cladding colors, derails with a patent-pending removable sash system for easy cleaning. 888.537.7828. –E.R.

Fluke Tools. Priced below $2,500, the TiS Thermal Imager provides a lower-priced option for diagnosing moisture intrusion, energy loss, missing insulation, HVAC problems, and electrical overheating, says the manufacturer. The unit, which can survive a 6 1/2-foot drop, features manual focus and a 3.7-inch display screen that is 30% larger than comparable image screens. Professional reporting software is included. –K.T.
