This remodeled Maryland home is the dazzling synthesis of a big idea and a modest slice of mid-century architecture.

Kitchen, before.

The "entry gallery" creates a light well and serves as the axis between the original home, addition, and garden.

The expanded kitchen opens to a large family room and brings in light from the yard.

The new master bedroom connects to the existing home via a two-story "lever" and overlooks the garden. The walls are all white, with spot colors throughout.

The addition provides a private yet transparent enclosure for the yard.

Besides leading to the new master bedroom, this narrow "spine" also accommodates a master bath, two closets, and the laundry room.
