Redesigning and rebuilding a three-story deck in a hilly Bay Area city next to the San Andreas fault "would be an ambitious undertaking," says Ray Petrin. In his first story for Professional Deck Builder, Petrin walks readers through the process of overcoming this design challenge.

To get the job done right, Petrin enlisted an architect, a geotechnical engineer to analyze the soil the new deck piers would rest on, and a structural engineer to calculate the loads and to design the deck to meet codes (especially any relating to seismic requirements).
