As heavy El Nino rains descend on California, FEMA announced that it has seen an increase in the amount of California residents purchasing new flood insurance policies. This is a 12% increase, the largest increase in recent history for residents purchasing flood insurance. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is administered by FEMA, working with more than 80 private insurance companies to offer flood insurance. To join the NFIP, a home or business needs to be in a community that has joined NFIP and "enforces sound floodplain management standards.”

Flooding can happen anywhere, but certain areas are especially prone to serious flooding. Many areas in California are at increased flood risk from El Niño, as a direct result of wildfires and drought.
