Fortune staffer Katherine Reynolds Lewis takes a look at the mental illness affecting millennials, which according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), is seen in 1 in 2 young people.

This problem may be linked to more than just a better understanding of mental issues with the slower economy seemingly compounding the issue. Unemployment rate among young Americans aged 20 to 24 is at 8.4% compared to the overall U.S. unemployment rate of 5%.

According to psychologist Jean Twenge, author of 'Generation Me' who spoke with Fortune Magazine,

“There’s still a lot of wasted talent out there. Some is the slow recovery, but it’s also a lot of young people either having issues or waiting for that so-called perfect job that’s never going to come.”
