After holding a two-day sting, 19 residents of Visalia, Calif., were arrested for posing as licensed contractors. The sting was conducted by the Contractors State License Board, which found that two out of the 19 suspects were already well known by the CSLB on suspicions of fraud. Authorities gathered a list of suspected, unlicensed contractors from online advertising websites, local newspaper ads, business cards, and internal files.
CSLB officials posed as homeowners asking for an estimate on driveway, exterior painting, tree removal, new fencing, flooring, and garage door installation projects. The two-day sting operation found that the suspects' bids were higher than the state cap for contracting without a license. Sixteen people from the sting operation face an additional misdemeanor charge for illegally advertising that they were licensed contractors.
