A sting operation in San Luis Obispo County, Calif., cited 18 contractors for having operated without a license and 17 for illegal advertising. Between Aug. 17-18 investigators went undercover as a single family seeking estimates for fencing, landscaping, and paint projects. These 18 contractors are being fined for operating without a license, as construction work exceeding $500 or more in materials and labor requires a state contractor license. First-conviction penalties for contracting without a license in California include up to six months in jail with up to $5,000 in fines. With each fine thereafter, the penalities become more severe.

All 18 contractors are to appear in court in October.
