Before: The kitchen in this traditional Dutch Colonial was small, cumbersome, and did not reflect the home's overall design aesthetic.

After: The new expansive kitchen flows forth from the old kitchen (the old kitchen occupied the space on the far right where the sink is) and bridges the dining room and the family room while respecting the home's architecture.

Before: The old kitchen was trapped within the confines of the home's exterior walls.

After: Walls were knocked down and the former kitchen has become home to a walk-in pantry and a massive Sub Zero refrigerator.

The new kitchen's island provides added workspace as well as informal dining for the entire family.

Priorities

  • Connect the kitchen with the family room

  • Keep the kitchen area defined via a large island

  • Maintain the 1920s Dutch Colonial aesthetic

Solutions

When the clients approached Kathryn O’Donovan at Normandy Remodeling to refurbish their kitchen, their desires were clear: take the small space crammed between the family and dining rooms and create more of a connection and open feel to complement the home’s 1920s Dutch Colonial look.

O’Donovan recommended a small but vital addition so that the kitchen could flow beyond its original confines to seamlessly blend with the family room. However, to delineate the spaces and to balance the length of the newly elongated kitchen, a large marble-topped island with extra seating was added. A diagonal walk-in pantry and Sub-Zero fridge are located in the old kitchen’s space which now allows easy access from the new, all-white kitchen, adjacent dining room, and family room.

Judges’ comments

“The design enhances the living space and creates a much more successful kitchen.”
