A couple in Aliquippa, Pa., paid more than $14,000 to Harbison Renovations for a deck replacement project. Yet after only 20% of the work was completed, the couple says the contractor stopped showing up.
The couple, Karen Horwatt and her husband Chris Kappeler, found that part of the work was done incorrectly. They even overheard one of the workers say that they were going to watch tutorials on YouTube about how to complete the job and discussed building codes that hadn’t been around for 20 years.
As workers continued to not show up, the couple called the Hopewell Township Police Department which filed criminal charges against Amy Harbison, owner of Harbison Renovations. She was charged with “theft by deception-false impression” and “home improvement fraud.” She is now required to pay $10,000 in restitution to Horwatt and Keppeler.
Stories like these continue to stress the importance for clients to seek out certified contractors.
