In order to combat the growing concerns over lead paint exposure, cities across the nation are taking action. This week in Buffalo, N.Y., the Buffalo City Council unanimously approved $10,000 to help with the purchase of over 1,400 instant lead testing kits.
Lead paint can cause brain damage, slow down brain development, and damage the nervous system. Growing concern over lead paint exposure increased following the aftermath of news breaking of lead exposure in Flint, Mich.’s water systems that left the city to be declared in a 'state of emergency.’ Increased attention on the impacts of lead have been growing ever since, with a renewed focus on the lead paint.
The lead exposure kits in Buffalo will be distributed throughout the city. In just 2015 alone, 273 children in Buffalo were tested for dangerous amounts of lead in their blood (a 13% increase from the previous year), according to reporter Dan Telvock, who has been reporting on lead paint for years.
