State Senate Bill 465 was introduced after it became known the contractor involved in the Berkeley project had settled more than $26 million of previous construction defect claims. Six students were killed and seven others were injured when the faulty balcony failed.
The bill, which Gov. Jerry Brown has signed into law, requires contractors report construction-related criminal convictions to the state licensing board. The bill also will force the state's Building Standards Commission to review balcony building code and determine whether they should be updated.
