By Joseph F. Schuler Jr.. Online training, like the services offered by, is often a godsend when faced with last-minute requirements for annual state re-licensing.

For Jack Johnston of Golden Rule Remodeling in Salem, Ore., the 12 hours of training to renew his architect's license was affordable and easy to use. The open-book format of the online instruction allows users to print out exams, then find answers as you read the coursework. Johnston paid $260 and completed training in a weekend. Although he would prefer in-person instruction, the local AIA chapter is in Portland, an inconvenient 45 miles away.

Dawn Maggio of Broward Kitchens and Baths in Pompano Beach, Fla., a general contractor and licensed interior designer, spent $1,000 for 40 hours of online training to make up for two years of license renewals after a long maternity leave. "You pay for things that are convenient," Maggio says. sends state licensing authorities notice of certification.
