Builder senior editor Jennifer Goodman looks at the seven things you can do to avoid you and your client spending too much in the wrong place.

  1. Take an honest look at where improvements can be made in a home and don’t opt out for the top design. Custom builder Tony Crasi says to “Strive to make it better and you can probably ask for more money because your’e making it more interesting, more beautiful, and more today.”
  2. Consider something different than just granite for your countertops. Think outside of the box and use quartz or quartzite instead.
  3. Ceiling ad-ons and designs can be great, but more often than not they go over the top. Use ceiling designs sparingly.
