In universal design, the built environment should suit everyone both young and old.

With so many factors to consider, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), which offers a Universal Design Certified Professional certificate, developed a handy checklist for remodelers.

Originally intended for entrants in its Contractor of the Year (CotY) design awards, the checklist is now available to anyone for free at

Tracy Wright, NARI’s director of special projects, says the list is based on a list originally created by the University of Iowa.
