For culinary enthusiasts, thoughtful kitchen design is more than a nice touch—it’s essential. When remodeler Kathryn O’Donovan of Normandy Design Build Remodeling, in Hinsdale, Ill., learned that her client liked to cook with fresh ingredients, she enlisted Quality Custom Cabinetry, in New Lenox, Ill., to build pull-out produce drawers with a perforated metal basket. By allowing airflow, the stainless steel mesh design makes it possible for certain fruits and vegetables to be stored at room temperature, ensuring peak taste and texture. The basket is attached to a walnut frame that contrasts with the distressed black cabinetry. O’Donovan wanted the island—which fits a 2-inch-thick walnut end block into the Calacatta marble countertop via a rabbet edge detail—to resemble a found piece of furniture.
