Slow and steady wins the race proved true for Fred Cann as he emerged on top during a rocky past few years. While many remodelers around him underbid and failed at jobs, Cann was able to charge competitive rates, build relationships, and take on varied sized projects. “We were fortunate,” he says. “My guys only had one day off between jobs all year.”
A combination of low overhead, flexibility, and an eclectic knowledge that comes from being an engineer who worked for a decade on high-pressure power plants and air conditioning systems for the City of New York has helped with Cann’s success.
Cann also has developed and runs several other businesses including plumbing and HVAC companies as well as BidForMaterials.com, an online exchange site connecting suppliers and contractors. To cut costs, each of Cann’s businesses shares some back office support.
While still focusing on a loyal fan base and many repeat and referred clients, Cann hopes to branch out to do more commercial remodeling in the coming years.
