Handling a range of work from custom homes, whole-house remodels, and sustainable building to kitchens, baths, and handyman jobs, Duke York's company, H. York Enterprises, provides the same level of communication and service for every job it takes on. “The house is an extension of the owner's personality. You are a guest in their space,” York says. “I set up several levels of communication with clients on each project, so we don't miss things.”

The company has 11 branded vehicles and 10 employees, and still accepts small jobs. “That work built my initial business. I need to present myself to the community as an honest person, so I will continue to do those jobs,” York says. He has two carpenters who have the skills for these smaller projects. Each year, the company increases its spending on warranty work.

For larger, more complicated jobs, York has three lead carpenters equipped with laptops so they can order materials and schedule tradespeople. He offers all carpenters training and continuing education.

York and his production manager worked hard to assemble a strong crew. “We wanted people with passion for what they are doing, beyond a paycheck,” he says.
